SUITCASEBOARDING

TYHLE, LUKÁŠ KARÁSEK

A group of four travelers spices up the dull wait for a train or bus by riding on their suitcase. The suitcase has been, is, and will always be their dearest companion, with a lifelong bond. Together with it, they discover countless mysterious corners during many short, unguarded moments spent at remote stations. The longer they have to wait, the stronger their urge becomes to play with their surroundings. They want to explore their environment not as a place with a specific function, but as a space that can inspire them. But inspire them to what?

The answer lies in a collage of scenes from the journey, performed by the tYhle ensemble. They present situations that we all experience on our travels, albeit in different variations, but each a little differently. The surroundings and people around us change, but we share something in common: most of the time, we share the same goal on our travels - we want to get somewhere. But what if the journey isn’t just about moving from one place to another, but is mainly about what happens along the way? Like that old saying, "the journey itself is the destination."

On our journeys, we often have to wait. In unfamiliar places, with unfamiliar people, just with our luggage, until circumstances allow us to move on. And when that happens, we rush to the next point. We stop there and obediently wait again until we can continue further. We hurry to wait. We wait to hurry.

And what do you do when you have to wait on a journey? Do you try to tame the excessive number of restless bags? Do you feel the need to connect with other travelers? Or do you try to distance yourself from the throng of difficult fellow travelers and impatiently scan for your connection? Where is your suitcase? Are you scooting around with it at the stop, on the bench, at the departure board, or even over other travelers?

Come and see how the "suitcase brothers" from tYhle wait. They're already on their way!

#moveforeverybody #moveinpublicspace

Letting go is part of every journey.

The project was created in 2021 as an outdoor performance. Since 2023, the tYhle ensemble has also been performing it as an indoor version. The project includes movement micro-interventions in public spaces, stemming from workshops with specific local groups. You can experience these interventions during MOVE Fest on Saturday, October 28th, at (currently) secret locations in Ostrava. But don’t worry, we’ll reveal them to you in time :)
