FRESH DANCE 2024

CARATED EVENING

The curated evening Fresh Dance will, for the second year, offer a unique opportunity for young and talented students of performing arts during MOVE Fest. This event focuses on supporting and showcasing promising artists, giving them the chance to present their work to a broader audience at a prestigious international festival.

During the previous edition, Fresh Dance 2023, students from four different art schools from both the Czech Republic and abroad participated, and the concept was met with great success. This gathering allowed them to share their experiences and insights not only during preparations for their individual performances but also in the subsequent discussions. The students themselves confirmed that this exchange of ideas and the inspiration they gathered throughout the festival program was very enriching for all participants and significantly broadened their horizons.

This year's curated evening will feature three choreographies performed by students from three different art schools in the Czech Republic and Slovakia:

  • Students from the Janáček Conservatory in Ostrava will present a fragment from Jiří Pokorný's ballet "The Giant's Escape" showcasing their latest work in celebration of the 70th anniversary of their alma mater's founding.

  • Joining from Prague, students of the Duncan Centre will perform the choreography "At The Beach" created during their third-year course on composition.

  • From Bratislava's Academy of Performing Arts (VŠMU), students will present Stephanie Schober's choreography "Kaleidoscope", which is based on the use of scores from minimalist musical compositions and explores the movements and physicality of individual dancers within the ever-changing dynamics of the group.

Fresh Dance once again promises an experience filled with innovation, creativity, and mutual inspiration among young artists, as well as for the broader public. Come and discover and support the future of Czech and Slovak performing arts.

"The Giant's Escape" is a ballet choreographed by one of the most successful contemporary Czech choreographers, Jiří Pokorný, originally created for NDT 2—the junior division of the Nederlands Dans Theater. The students of the Janáček Conservatory had the honor of learning a portion of this ballet under the guidance of the author himself and dancer and pedagogue Nataša Novotná. During Fresh Dance, they will replicate this piece for an international festival audience.

The choreography portrays the theme of a courageous, difficult, and dangerous human journey during forced migration, a subject that deeply moved the choreographer in recent years. It perfectly resonates with the festival's theme of leaving...
